"Fight With Your Heart"
A poem about standing up for yourself when you find yourself in danger. This poem is based on an emotional experience I had when I visited India. Although I was only a mere witness to what was going on, it left me inspired and quite emotional, which is why I was prompted to share this story in the form of a poem.
"We need some booze yaar!", my dad loudly yelled.
I don't need no booze, I just wanna go to bed.
Here I am thousands of miles overseas,
In Hindustan out & about feeling free.
Who knows when I may get this chance again?
I'm here right now, let's make the most before it ends.
"Theek hai yaar, chalo!", I replied.
But my body said you’re chewing more than you can bite.
You see, I still hadn't gotten over my jet lag.
Last night I couldn't sleep, all thanks to YOU DAD.
He kept snoring so loud, I thought I was under attack.
We're both home right now though, so I'm still glad.
We pulled up to a liquor store right on the street.
In Delhi there's stores on every road that you can see.
My dad jumped out of the car, like a 10 year old kid that got a brand new guitar.
As he was placing his order 3 dogs jumped in.
It happened so fast, I didn’t get a chance to think.
They had fury in their eyes, they were going for a kill.
They were Desi dogs, what else would you think?
An animal MMA match in front of my eyes,
In the streets of the 6 I could have NEVER devised!
This was a 1 V 2 match that felt wrong from the start,
A female dog in pain, but she was fighting from her heart.
She was barking the loudest and then I looked at her paw,
And it made sense why she was fighting at all…
The owner of the store felt the need to step in.
He shooed the dogs away and it was the end.
The female dog knew it was finally time.
She was not being herself, she had realized.
More than the scar on her paw, her pride was hurt.
They provoked a fight she fought back in return.
To win a fight like this? Her chances were slim.
Instead of being embarrassed, she refused to give in.
In life sometimes you will fall down,
But look out for the ones who want you to STAY down.
The difference is apparent, you just need a heart to see…
How to fight back hard when you’re getting bullied.
"We Stand United"
A poem about the history of Indian culture and our ability to appreciate various languages, religions and dialects. I was inspired to write this poem after visiting the famous "Statue of Unity", which is located in Gujarat, India.
I am from India, the country from which I entered into this dunya.
My ancestors woke up one day, in a foreign land.
What was once their home, was taken away from their hands…
But they never stopped fighting, which is why the Statue of Unity proudly stands.
Today we are the world’s largest mosaic.
Proud of our blood, something no one can take away.
They may have tried to divide us, but today, we stand united.
"A Snowy Day"
This is a poem about a snow storm that happened in the Toronto area, in early February 2025. It was a massive snow storm, the most brutal storm since the past 2 years and many roads and neighborhood areas were blocked. I had to help some of my neighbors with shoveling the main road on our street, because cars were getting stuck: I only say this so you can have an idea of how intense the storm was! The main message of this poem is to help people understand that although life is full of challenges, every challenge becomes solvable if we focus on aswering one question at a time. Although it may sound counterintuitive to those who want to jump and answer the "big question" at hand, in my experience, the solution we often seek becomes clear as we continue taking action, one step at a time.
Life can be a mixed bag sometimes…
You just want to sleep in, staying in bed is the only thing on your mind…
But the whims of the day are at your doorstep, you have no choice but to quietly abide.
One door may close all of a sudden, leaving you with no place to go.
The next door may bring you surprises, which you never thought were possible!
Each day brings it’s own questions, but it demands us to answer them only one at a time.
If we had all the answers, would we have anything left to find?
If however, we answer these questions, only at our own pace,
We may be able to end the day with a bright smile on our face.
After all, what more does one need at the end of a long day?
Besides the hug, of a special someone, who simply runs to our embrace.
